Memorial Day

Monday, May 27, 2024

Psalm 135:13 “Thy name, O Lord, endureth forever, and Thy memorial, O Lord, throughout all generations.”

In the late 1860’s following the Civil War, Memorial Day also known as Decoration Day, was organized by a group of once enslaved people from Charleston, South Carolina.  On May 5, 1866, closing businesses and decorating graves with flags and flowers marked the beginning of what was to become Memorial Day. But it was In 1968 that it became a nationwide day of remembrance.

Even now this day is set aside to decorate graves of fallen soldiers who gave their life in war for our country. We remember them on this special day by honoring their sacrifices on our behalf as citizens of the country.

Gathering with family and friends after decorating gravesides, we would enjoy a picnic. Eating my mom’s homemade ice cream was often a part of our Memorial Day picnic. We also enjoyed grilled hamburgers and hotdogs.  Other sides were shared by friends who joined us for a picnic supper.

Later we played games, laughing and enjoying each other’s company.

While some things have changed since my parents are no longer living, we still enjoy gathering with friends and family on Memorial Day.

Thinking about my Savior at this time as well. Remembering all the love and sacrifices made on our behalf that we may have fellowship with God and reunited one day with him and a great crowd spoken of in The Bible in Hebrews 12:1-2.

The Bible is a written memorial telling us of another honorable death on our behalf to solemnly remember in John 19:15-17 Pilate asked the crowd, “Shall I crucify your king?  We have no king but Caesar the Chief Priests answered.  Finally Pilate handed Him over to them to be crucified.  So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.  Carrying His own cross, He went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). There they crucified Him…”

I Corinthians 15:4 “And that He (Jesus) was buried, that He was raised on the third day, according to the scriptures.”
