Make Your Bed

(Marine Drill Instructor telling a female in boot camp how to make her bed)

Colossians 3:23 "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters"

Are you with me and in the low percentage of people (27%) who make their bed consistently every morning?

Did you know there are 5 things required of a Marine in making his bed? The bed needs to be specifically done in a certain way or inspection fails and consequences result.

Well, my bed would not stand inspection of a Marine, but I do feel a sense of accomplishment when it’s made, and I continue to accomplish more to my day if physically possible.

I looked up the lessons that Admiral William H. McRaven (Ret.) gave.

I think they’re worth sharing. Here they are:

  • Start with a small accomplishment: Making your bed each morning is a simple way to start the day with a sense of accomplishment and discipline.
  • Teamwork is essential: You cannot achieve great things alone; you need a team to help you paddle through life's challenges.
  • Embrace failure: Failure is inevitable, but it can make you stronger and teach you resilience. Don't be afraid of it.
  • Persevere through hardship: Life is a struggle, and you must be prepared to face adversity. Don't give up when things get tough.
  • Give your best effort: Always give your best shot, no matter the task, to build a strong work ethic and a sense of pride.
  • Don't be afraid of the "circuses": These are the difficult and painful parts of life. They are opportunities to build strength and resilience.
  • Stand up to bullies: Don't back down from those who try to take advantage of you.
  • Be your best in the darkest moments: When things are at their worst, you must be at your best.
  • Start singing when you're up to your neck in mud: When you are in the most difficult situations, find a way to keep your spirits up and encourage others.
